The Homer Multitext project
The oldest manuscripts of the Iliad with scholia
The Homer Multitext project is currently focusing on manuscripts of the Iliad with scholia. The six listed here are the earliest manuscripts with scholia (generally dated to the tenth or eleventh century).
The following four manuscripts are laid out by page:
- British Library, Burney 86 (“the Townley Homer”). Public domain images provided by the British Library.
- Florence, Biblioteca Laureniziana, codex 32.2. Documentary images from the Laurentian Library presumed to be in the public domain.
- Venice, Biblioteca Marciana 454 = 822 (“the Venetus A”). All images derived from originals ©2007, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Venezia, Italia. The derivative images are ©2010, Center for Hellenic Studies. Both original and derivative images are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License. The CHS/Marciana Imaging Project was directed by David Jacobs of the British Library.
- Escorial Monastery, codex Ω 1.12. Images were made possible by the kind cooperation and permission of the Real Monaste rio de San Lorenzo de El Escoria, José Luis del Valle Merino, O.S.A., Director, and are dervied from images (c) 2010, The University of Kentucky, Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments. Two closely related manuscripts follow a layout spanning a verso and facing recto. The Homer Multitext project is preparing citable images of these bifolio spreads. The links here are to work in progress creating composite images illustraing bifolio spreads.
